General Note
Letter to Sally Phelps, Liberty, Clay County, Missouri, from William Wines Phelps, Kirtland, Ohio, dated April 1836. States that the Kirtland Temple was dedicated on Sunday, March 27, 1836--congregation of about 1,000 in the House and as many outside, as well; opening prayer by Sidney Rigdon; an angel came in during the prayer; President Rigdon preached from the Book of Matthew for 2 1/2 hours; President Joseph Smith, Jr., was acknowledged as prophet and seer; "One of the solemnest as well as sublimest scenes I ever witnessed."; President Smith delivered the dedicatory prayer; Congregation shouted "Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna, to God and the Lamb, henceforth and forever; amen, amen, and amen" three times; manifestation of the Lord to Brother Joseph and Oliver in the temple on April 3, where they learned that the "great and terrible day of the Lord" was near; attended a feast at Father Johnson's house.
