Scope and Contents note

Samuel Richards Utah Territorial Tax Book, 1850-1857. Including: A brown, hard-cover book (16 x 9.5 cm) used by Samuel Richards to record territorial and county taxes paid in Utah Territory during the years 1850-1857. Includes some tax information for such prominent Church figures as Heber C. Kimball, W. W. Phelps, Abraham O. Smoot, and others.

Samuel Richard Jewkes Sawmill Account Book—Emery County, Utah— 1879-1881. Including: One tan, leather-bound book (19 x 12 cm) used by Jewkes to record the amounts of debt and credit carried by various individuals towards his sawmill. The first page is an index of individuals recorded in the account book, created by Jewkes. Also contained in the middle of the account book is a song titled Mary Darling.

This collection contains a series of diverse items purchased from a private collector of Utah materials.

Samuel Richards: Born 9 August 1824 in Richmond, Berkshire County, Massachusetts. A member of the first city council of Salt Lake City. Also an alderman, a president of the Salt Lake City Council, a Justice of Salt Lake County, a member of the Territorial Legislature, and a U. S. commissioner for Davis County. Died 26 November 1909 in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Samuel Richard Jewkes: Born 22 August 1853 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Died 27 August 1886 in Orangeville, Emery County, Utah.

Giles Moses: Born 26 April 1798 in Norfolk, Connecticut. Died 1870 in Salt Lake City, Utah

H. S. Lippincott: One time Vice President of the Pauly Jail Building Company.

Pauly Jail Building Company: Founded in 1856 by Mr. P. J. Pauly, a German-American born in 1832. Incorporated in St. Louis, Missouri in 1885. First to use steel jail construction. Joseph S. Roberson: A Salt Lake City agent on the Ben Holladay Overland Stage Line.

Sidney A. Knowlton: Born 24 May 1793 in Ashford, Windham, Connecticut. A farmer and stockraiser. Died 20 April 1863 in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Hawkeye Steel Barb Fence Company: No information found.

Louisa Lula Greene Richards: Born 8 April 1849 in Kanesville, Pottawattamie County, Iowa. A member of the general board of the Primary Association from 1892–1917. First editor of the Woman's Exponent, the first publication owned and edited by women of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Author of hundreds of poems and stories that appeared in the LDS Church periodicals. Died 9 September 1944 in Salt Lake City.

Joseph F. Merrill: Born 24 August 1868 in Richmond, Cache County, Utah. Received a B.S. from the University of Michigan in 1893 and a PhD from Johns Hopkins in 1899. Was a professor of physics and electrical engineering at the University of Utah, as well as the principal of their State School of Mines. An Apostle of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1931 to his death. Died 3 February 1952 in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Joseph W. Summerhays: Born 15 January 1849 in Pimlico, Middlesex, England. Founded J. W. Summerhays & Sons hide and wool business. On the Board of Directors of the Deseret News. Ordained a Seventy on 11 March 1876. First mayor and Chairman of the Town Board of Forest Dale, Utah (now part of Salt Lake City). Also, Chairman of the Water and Power Commission of Forest Dale. Died 28 June 1929 in Salt Lake City.
