Scope and Contents

Handwritten and typed journal includes nearly daily entries from January 1, 1898 to December 31, 1904. Begins and ends with Talmage in Salt Lake City, Utah. Most entries are of meetings, lectures, and funerals Talmage attended. Mentions beginning of Spanish-American War in April 1898. Describes travel to Europe from June-August 1898, spending most of the time in England and Scotland, as well as stints to Norway and Ireland, often delivering lectures on Utah and the Church. Mentions completion of manuscript for "Articles of Faith" in January 1899, and its subsequent publication. Includes typescripts of patriarchal blessings given by Jesse B. Martin on August 21, 1899; and, by John Smith on October 14, 1900. Typed entries begin on May 31, 1900 entry. Latter part of journal describes involvement with examining several mines throughout Utah and the other parts of the Western U.S., and subsequent involvement in legal matters related to mines. Mentions beginning on lecture series on "Jesus the Christ" in September 1904. Dated 1898-1904.

Originals restricted. Digital copy of the first twelve of thirty volumes of Talmage's personal journals (1879-1911) available online. Unedited typescripts and microfilm of all thirty volumes also available.

Conditions Governing Use

The literary rights to the Talmage collection rest with the Harold B. Lee Library and the Talmage family. Permission to publish material from the James E. Talmage collection must be obtained from the Supervisor of Reference Services at specialcollections@byu.edu.
