Scope and Contents

Handwritten journal includes nearly daily entries from January 1, 1896 to December 31, 1897. Begins and ends with Talmage in Salt Lake City, Utah. Most entries are of meetings, lectures, and funerals Talmage attended. Journal begins with brief entry about Utah being admitted as a state on January 4, 1896. Includes description of travels to Jacksonville, Florida to attend meetings of the National Education Association, February-March 1896, whereTalmage visited many sites on his way there and back, including Independence, Missouri. Also includes a description of a brief trip to Yellowstone National Park with a group of students in August 1897. Mentions his resignation as President of University of Utah in April 1897. The majority of the latter part of the journal describes Talmages journey to Europe to attend various museum and geological society meetings, and other business, in England, Sweden, and Russia, June-September 1897. Dated 1896-1897.

Originals restricted. Digital copy of the first twelve of thirty volumes of Talmage's personal journals (1879-1911) available online. Unedited typescripts and microfilm of all thirty volumes also available.

Conditions Governing Use

The literary rights to the Talmage collection rest with the Harold B. Lee Library and the Talmage family. Permission to publish material from the James E. Talmage collection must be obtained from the Supervisor of Reference Services at specialcollections@byu.edu.
