Biographical History

Brigham Smoot (1869-1946) was a sugar industry manager in Utah and Idaho.

Brigham Roland Smoot was born on June 15, 1869, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Abraham Owen Smoot and Anne Kirstine Mauritzen. He attended Brigham Young Academy, and after graduation was called to serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He first served in Samoa from 1889 to 1891, and was later sent to Tonga as a missionary from 1891 to 1892. After returning from his mission he attended Lehigh University, graduating with a bachelor's degree in science and chemistry in 1898. Smoot came back to Utah after school, working in the mining industry in Eureka, Utah. It was during this period that he met Margaret Annella Nesbit and they married on June 20, 1900, in Provo, Utah. They had two children together. After his marriage, Smoot turned from mining to join the sugar industry where he studied refining methods in various factories. In 1901, he began working for the Utah-Idaho Sugar Company as general supervisor. He retired from the company in 1937 and moved to Pasadena, California.

He died in Pasadena, California, on December 16, 1946.
