Contains photocopies and transcripts of the original journals of Luella Wakefield Washburn, Jesse A. Washburn, and James Andrews, as well as one unidentified person's journal. Materials include physical copies of the journals, CDs of the records, and typed transcripts. They pertain to Jesse and James' mission in Colorado, accounts of daily life including financial records of expenses and income, weather, and daily activities like doing laundry, eating meals, and travelling for work. Dated circa 1899-1914.

Biographical / Historical

Luella Wakefield Washburn (1877-1963) was the wife of Jesse Alvin Washburn and a wife and mother in Utah.

Luella was born June 15, 1877 in Fountain Green, Utah. Her parents were Thomas Garlic and Maria Jane Johnson Wakefield. In 1883, they moved to Huntington. Luella grew up working as a herder, a post office clerk, and finally a teacher. She married Jesse A. Washburn in 1896 when she was 19. She gave birth to eleven children, only one of whom died in infancy. The Washburns homesteaded in Duchesne County, owned a millinery shop, taught, and farmed. Luella's husband died on March 14, 1951, after which she moved to Salt Lake to be closer to her family. She was named Mother of the Year in 1953 at age 75. She passed away on December 13, 1963 of heart problems, and was buried in Huntington.

James Andrews (1877-1936) was a farmer in Utah.

James Andrews was born on May 26, 1877 in Nephi, Utah. His parents' names were William Andrews, Jr. and Hannah Cunliffe Andrews. He grew up helping his father on their farm in Nephi. He married Eliza Etta Littley (called Etta) on June 5, 1901 in the Salt Lake City temple, when both were 24 years old. They had six children born between 1902 and 1917: James Erva, Thelma Ann, Hannah May, Blanche Sophia, Floyd Littley, and William Glen. The Andrews family farmed and bought cattle. James later served a mission to England from 1913-1914. While on his mission, Thelma passed away of pneumonia. James farmed and traded cattle throughout his life. He died on March 9, 1936 as a result of a head trauma from a train ride. He was buried in Nephi City Cemetery.

Jesse Washburn (1873-1951) was a Superintendent and seminary teacher in Southern Utah.

Jesse Washburn was born on April 30, 1873 to Daniel Abraham Washburn and Margaret Ann Johnson. He was born at Shonesburg, Kane County, Utah. He grew up working with his uncle, Hyrum Smith Washburn, learning carpentry, wheelwright, and shoemaking skills. He married Luella Wakefield on September 2, 1896. They then moved to Huntington, where they lived wtih Luella's mother for a while. Jesse Washburn began attending the Brigham Young Academy in 1897. He served a mission in the Western States Mission in the Arizona-New Mexico area. After he returned, they moved to Provo and Jesse went back to the Academy. They later moved to Duchesne, Utah, and Jesse was selected as the Superintendent of the Duchesne County schools. They later returned to Huntington and then to Provo in 1922, where Washburn worked as a Superintendent and Seminary teacher. Jesse died on March 14, 1951.
