Biographical / Historical
Sir Thomas Knollys (ca. 1558-1596) was seventh son of Sir Francis Knollys and Catherine Carey. He married Odelia de Morada. Knollys was Governor of Ostend (Belgium) in 1586 and aided Peregrine Bertie in the Siege of Bergen op Zoom in 1588.

General
Letter signed, with address to "Monsieur Knowles" on second leaf. Written in French from Ostend, Belgium, 15 March 1585. The "Monsieur Knowles" was likely Thomas Knollys, seventh son of the Elizabethan statesman Sir Francis Knollys, and Governor of Ostend. The letter was from H. de Pottre and six other officers of Dutch troops at Ostend. They explain the extreme poverty of the troops, and apply to Knollys for some assistance.
