Abraham H. Cannon diary volume 7, 1886 March-September
Scope and Contents
Abraham describes his six-month imprisonment. He writes of his experience interacting with other prisoners, many of whom are other members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including future President of the Church Lorenzo Snow. He spends most of his time reading, writing sermons, and speaking with visitors. He participates in a meeting with the Utah state legislature regarding the Church's relationship with the law. He writes about the government's firm stance that polygamous marriages would face prosecution. This volume contains a copy of a letter from the inmates to the governor of Utah explaining their adherence to their religion over what they saw as an unjust law. Abraham continues to write about the Edmunds Bill and its progress through legislature. After serving his time, he was released from prison in August of 1886. The end of this volume contains a log of the names and information of those incarcerated alongside Abraham. Dated 1886 March to September.
