Scope and Contents

Red velvet photograph album contains 78 Culmer family photographs. Includes a variety of Newcomb, Morris and Co., and C. R. Savage cabinet cards or CDVs (carte de visites), as well as some from San Francisco photographers. Dated apporximately 1880-1910. The second is a Culmer/Wells family photo album. This contains 23 cabinet cards. Many photographs in both albums are unlabled.

Biographical History

The family Culmer, Henry Lavender Adolphus, 1854-1914, is a Utah family of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Henry L. A. Culmer married Susan Annette Wells on December 31, 1878 in Utah. Susan was the daughter of Daniel Hanmer Wells, a mayor of Salt Lake City. Together they had four children; Catherine Chapin Roberts born 1879, Henry Wells Culmer born 1883, Florence Culmer born 1886, and Kennett Alley Culmer born 1891. Father Henry was a renowned painter of Utah and other wilderness landscapes.

Biographical History

The family Wells, Daniel Hanmer, 1814-1891, is a polygamous family of mid to late 19th century Utah. Daniel Hanmer Wells was born in 1814 and died in 1891. Wells married six women; Louisa Free, Martha Givens Harris, Emmeline Blanche Woodward, Susan Hannah Alley, Lydia Ann Alley, and Eliza Ann Foscue. Daniel was an apostle for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as well as being the third mayor of Salt Lake City. Daniel's daughter Susan Annette Wells born of wife Susan Hannah Alley in 1857 marries Henry L. A. Culmer, the renowned painter.
