Scope and Contents

Materials include a manuscript written by Elizabeth Wood Kane, possibly a draft of her autobiography, written in 1869. The manuscript has many edits and corrections, some made by Kane's husband Thomas L. Kane. It provides information about settling in northwest Pennsylvania, founding the town of Kane, the fire that burned down their lumber mill, the first settlers in Kane, and a visit in their town from a Native American named Sawlog. Elizabeth also questions if it is right for women to stay with their husbands who are drunkards. She writes about Stonewall Jackson and the Bucktails, and she also discusses family relationships such as her husband being estranged from his family for almost a year; she mentions that the causes she and her husband have worked for (abolitionism, Mormons, and the Female Medical College) have triumphed. Dated March 26-April 11, 1869.
