Scope and Contents

This series contains a history of the National Folk Organization and it's members, and records of the Tribute and Heritage award. Materials include emails, letters, formal types biographies and histories, presentation notes, photographs and other text materials. The historical information detaisl the establishment of the organization, it's community involvement, international exposure, and overall growth. The biographies refer to board members, prominent indivuals in the folk comunity, and NFO members. Most of the biographical and historical information was presented at the NFO conference, published in the NFO News, or kept for membership records. Dates range approximately from 1986-2012.

The National Folk Organization (1986- ) is committed to the preservation and promotion of the folk art traditions.

Vytautas F. Beliajus, Mary Bee Jensen, George Frandsen, and L. DeWayne Young founded the National Folk Organization (NFO) in 1986 to provide information and opportunities in the folk arts around the United States.

Many of its members include persons involved in dance ensembles, institutions, music groups, choreographers, teachers, and foundations, as well as community ethnic festivals, and international festivals that host folk ensembles from around the world.

The NFO holds annual conferences to promote activities of those involved, and continues to unite individuals and organizations that support folk arts.
