Oral history materials from an interview with the Wadley family, conducted by Nancy Jagelka on July 24, 2004 as part of the Fruits of their Labors. Includes audiocassette recordings of the interviews, as well as transcripts, field notes, photographs, a photo log, and an audio log created by the interviewers. During the course of the interview the Wadleys discussed values, fruit picking, seasonal activities, education, games, family activities, foodways, and function of family in orchard.

Biographical History

The Wadley family has owned a fruit farm in Pleasant Grove, Utah for generations. Alex and Nelda Wadley currently own it. They raised their five children on the farm. Alex. and Nelda are the parents.of Mary Wadley Jackson, Loraine Wadley Hart, Laura Wadley, James Wadley, and Steven Wadley. Alex and Nelda still have live in a home on the orchard property. The orchard is still a working orchard.

Biographical History

Alex Wadley is the owner of the orchard and the father of the Wadley children. He was born in the house that he lives in. He attended Brigham Young University. Alex found it necessary to supplement his income from the orchard. After taking the civil service examination, he was hired by the civil service commission. He worked on Deer Creek Dam up Provo Canyon. Then he worked for Brigham Young University. His last job before retirement was with the Utah state road commission. He retired approximately 20 years ago and has stayed busy with the orchard since then.

Nelda Wadley is the wife of Alex Wadley and the mother of Mary, Loraine, Laura, Steven and James. She was a homemaker and integral part of running the farm. Currently is in poor health.

Mary Wadley Jackson is the oldest of the Wadley children. She grew up on the Pleasant Grove orchard. As an adult she has taught school and worked as a librarian. She received her MLS from Brigham Young University. She and her husband have four children.

Loraine Wadley Hart is the third child of Alex Wadley and Nelda Wadley. She and her husband live in a home on the orchard property. They have five children. Loraine graduated from Brigham Young University with a degree in Russian.

Laura Wadley is the second child of Alex and Nelda Wadley. She has degrees in English and American literature from Brigham Young University. She work at the Provo Library in the children's library.

Steven Wadley is the fourth child of Alex and Nelda Wadley. He has a PhD in Chinese and teaches Chinese and International Studies at Portland State University. He spends his summers helping on the farm in Pleasant Grove, Utah.

James Wadley is the youngest child of Alex and Nelda Wadley. He has a masters in computer science from Brigham Young University and is working on another masters degree at the University of Utah.

Nancy Jagelka is a student in the Fruits of Their Labors Folklife Field School. She lives in Washington, D.C.
