Scope and Contents note

Material contains a collection of documents relating to the World War II experiences of Bill McKell. McKell was called to active duty with the National Guard in 1941. He served with the 96th Bomb Group in the European Theatre. In "There I Was: Remembrance of World War II" (several versions of which are included), he recalls first hearing about Pearl Harbor as a serviceman. In that piece he also recounts being taken as a prisoner-of-war by the German Home Guard after being forced to bail out of his airplane. He describes the Mormon services put together by church members in the prisoner of war camp. The prisoners were initially sent to Stalag Luft III, but eventually relocated to Stalag VII-A, which was liberated by General Patton's 14th Armored Division on April 29, 1945. Also includes an Ensign article about the Stalag Luft III Latter-Day Saint prisoners, minutes from the Mormon weekly meetings in the camp, a "Behind the Wire: Stalag Luft III South Compound" memoir transcript by Arnold A. Wright, and several various documents about McKell's military service. Dated 1943-2004.
