Robert J. Smith earned a B.S.degree in Business Administration and Accounting from BYU in 1948. The following year he earned an MBA from Northwestern. Upon graduation, he joined the BYU faculty as a member of the Accounting Department. Smith served as Department Chair of Accounting from 1951 until 1955, when he left for Indiana University to pursue a DBA degree. Returning to BYU, he was again appointed Chair of Accounting from 1958 to 1962. From 1963-1964, Smith served as acting Dean. When the School of Business became the Marriott School of Management, Smith continued to teach on the graduate faculty in the Institute of Accountancy. From 1968 through 1988, Smith served as a University Vice-President in the following capacities: 1968-1972 Assistant Academic Vice-President 1971-1978 Associate Academic Vice-President 1978-1983 Financial Vice-President 1984-1988 Jerusalem Center Comptroller.
