Lyman Sidney Shreeve was born March 28th, 1915 to James S. Shreeve and Tamar G. Hamblin. He was raised in St. Johns Arizona although he was born in Eager Arizona. On April 10th 1936 he married Afton Kartchner, and later in the same year he departed on a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Argentina. After this mission ended in 1938 WWII broke out forcing Lyman to work instead of returning to his education and during this time his first two children were born. After the war the couple decided to serve another mission in Argentina from 1946-48. At the recommendation of President David O Mckay, Lyman entered college again to complete his education. In 1949 he received a Bachelor’s degree in Spanish and Portuguese language and received his masters in Spanish and Portuguese language and literature in 1951. He and his wife were then called as leaders of the Uruguay-Paraguay Mission where they served from 1951-1955. Their third child was born during this mission. Lyman then worked as a Spanish professor at Brigham Young University from 1965-1980 and completed his Ph. D. in American Literature and Latin American studies in 1970. They both served another mission in the Illinois Chicago South Mission in 1981-1982, then another as the first mission leaders of the Buenos Aires Argentina MTC from 1985-87, then again as the first mission leaders of the Columbian MTC from 1992-93.
