Biography

William Barnabe Bennett (1840-1906) was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints who emigrated from England and settled in Midvale, Utah.

William Barnabe Bennett was born in Brierley Hill, Staffordshire, England on December 13, 1840, to Thomas Barnabe Bennett and Ann Lucy Lacey. He was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on March 20, 1850, by his father. He learned the brick mason trade and emigrated to America in 1861, arriving in Utah in 1862. He married Sarah Ford and they were married in November 1866. They homesteaded in Midvale, Utah and after much labor, created a fruitful farm and orchard. In order to supplement his income, Bennett hauled neighbors and supplies using his team and wagon. He also rented out his farming equipment. Bennett was interested in herbal medicine and he and his wife raised all twelve children to adulthood without medical aid from doctors. He died at the age of 65 on March 9, 1906.

Twelve handwritten diaries. Bennett was the father of eleven children, was a brick mason and a postmaster, and had many callings for the Mormon Church. The entries are often detailed and include Bennett's daily concerns and his thoughts relating to religion.
