Biographical History

Hugh W. Colton (1901-1990) was a lawyer in Vernal, Utah.

Hugh Wilkens Colton was born to Sterling Driggs Colton and Nancy Wilkens Colton on January 11, 1901, in Vernal, Utah. Colton was a co-founder of the Marriott Corporation. In 1927 he opened a root beer stand in Washington with Marriot. They opened three more Hot Shoppes with Marriott, but sold his interest to him for $5,000. Colton is a graduate of both the University of Utah and George Washington Law School. He was an army veteran from D-Day and received many awards including the Silver Star, the French Croix de Guerre, and the Medal of Honor in Belgium. He increased to level of colonel in the army. He was a rancher and a lawyer. He was also the Director of the National Cowboy Hall of Fame. He was married to Marguerite Maughan. He died April 14, 1990, at home in Maeser, Vernal, Utah.
