Biography

Levi Savage (1820-1910) was a farmer, teacher, and soldier in Utah. Levi Savage was born on March 23, 1820 in Greenfield, Ohio. He grew up in southern Michigan, but moved with his family to Nauvoo, Illinois following their conversion to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He joined the saints in their migration west in 1846, and enlisted in the Mormon Battalion where he served until 1847. He married Jane Mathers (died 1851) on January 23, 1848, and they had one child together. Following his wife's death he was called in 1852 to serve as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to the Far East. On his return journey to Utah in 1856 he travelled with the Willie Handcart Company. During the Mormon War he served in the Nauvoo Legion, and after the conflict he married Ann Brummel Cooper in 1858. He then moved to Lehi, and in 1865 further south to Toquerville, Utah. Savage died on December 13, 1910 in Toquerville.

Scope and Contents Handwritten diaries. The original items are housed in two boxes while the photocopies of these materials are housed in three. There are many gaps in the entries including a sixteen-year gap from 1861 to 1877. Savage writes about his mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to "Siam" (Thailand) from 1852 to 1856. He travelled to Rangoon from Salt Lake City, Utah, by way of San Francisco and Calcutta. He returned by way of Calcutta, England, and New York City. He was...
