Biography

John Whitmer (1802-1878) was a early Latter-day Saint leader in Missouri.

John Whitmer was born in 1802 in Pennsylvania, but his family soon moved to New York. In New York, John's family heard about Joseph Smith and offered to let him live with them. During this time, John Whitmer was a scribe for Joseph Smith. John was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Seneca Lake. John Whitmer was also one of the Eight Witnesses of the Book of Mormon. In 1830, John was appointed to Church historian and recorder. On February 10, 1833, John married Sarah Maria Jackson. In 1834, John served as counselor for the presidency for the Church in Missouri. In March 1838, John Whitmer was excommunicated from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. John Whitmer died in 1878.

Handwritten list dated 14 May and 25 June 1837. The item is a record of two marriages performed by John Whitmer, an early Mormon Church leader and one of the "Eight Witnesses" to the authenticity of the Book of Mormon. The marriages were between Willard Snow and Malvina Harvy and John H. Zimmar and Elisa Jackson.

Handwritten and signed letter, dated 29 Aug. 1837, and addressed to the Mormon Church leaders, David Whitmer and Oliver Cowdery. Whitmer writes about the title to lands in Far West, Missouri. The sheet also includes a some miscellaneous notes and scribblings from 1862. Also included is a typescript of the item.

Handwritten and signed letter, dated 1 March 1871, and addressed to "Dear Children." The item was written in Far West, Missouri. Whitmer wishes his children good health and extends an invitation to them to visit him. Also included are salutations from Whitmer's son, Jake Whitmer.

Collection contains two letters and a postcard received by John Whitmer and his family. The letters focus on family news, including a letter from Alexander Whitmer complaining of the conditions of the Union Army during the Civil War, a letter from David P. Whitmer lamenting the death of his child, Harry G. Whitmer, and a postcard announces the birth of a baby boy to members of the Whitmer family in 1916.
