Following his marriage in 1904, Nelson studied for a year at Clark University in Massachusetts. In returned to Brigham Young University afterward, but in 1910 was assigned as the principal of Uinta Stake Academy. In 1912 he was released from this position, and worked a farm in the area. He returned to teaching at Weber College in 1914, and later that year moved back to Provo to teach at BYU. However, he left the university again in 1920 to try founding a newspaper in Salt Lake City. By 1921 he took his family to Logan to teach at the Utah Agricultural College for a year. They then moved to Downey, Idaho to work a farm, while Nelson taught at Preston High School.

Nelson died on May 12, 1946 in Downey, Idaho.
