Biography

Fred Steiner (1923-2011) was an American film and television composer and musicologist.

Fred Steiner was born February 24, 1923, in New York City. He was the son of film composer George Steiner. Fred graduated from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Ohio, and, later with a PhD from University of Southern California. Steiner wrote scores for radio broadcasts, then starting in 1947, arranged, conducted and composed film and television scores. He was nominated for an Academy Award for work on "The Color Purple" (1985). Steiner worked in Mexico in the late 1950s archiving Latin American music, and later retired to Mexico, where he died June 23, 2011.
