Biography
John Lyon (1803-1889) was a poet and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
John Lyon, known as one of the most prominent poets in Latter-day Saint history, was born on March 4, 1830 to Janet McArthur and Thomas Lyon in Glasgow, Scotland. He was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on March 31, 1844 at Kilmarnock. He immigrated from Scotland to Salt Lake City, Utah, in early 1853. He published a book of poetry, "The Harp of Zion", just before leaving for America and donated the proceeds to the Perpetual Emigration Fund. John Lyon arrived in Salt Lake City, Utah in September 1853. He wrote articles and poems for various publications, including the Deseret News and the Daily Telegraph. He married Jannett Thomson on February 23, 1826 in Kilmarnock, Scotland and they had 13 children. He married a second wife, Caroline Holland, in 1856 in Salt Lake City and they had 7 children together. John Lyon died November 28, 1889 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
