Biography
Juan Bautista de Anza; full name: Juan Bautista de Anza Bezerra Nieto; b. July 1736; d. December 19, 1788; born in Fronteras, Sonora (near Arizpe) on northern frontier of New Spain; 1752 elisted in the army at the Presidio of Fronteras; explored much of what is now Arizona; proposed California expedition in 1772 and got as far north as Monterey, California.
