Susan Martha Bayard Weir (1817-1900) was a school teacher and wife to Robert Walter Weir and mother to Julian Alden Weir.
Susan Martha Bayard was born in Newark, New Jersey, on August 6, 1817 to Reverend Lewis Pintard Bayard and Cornelia Matilda Rhea. When her father passed away in 1840 the family was in a bad financial position so Susan taught school. After the death of professor Robert Walter Weir's first wife, Susan worked for the family caring for the children at West Point. They married on July 15, 1846. Susan had eight children, six surviving to adulthood. She passed away in Garrison, New York, on September 5, 1900.

The first year of the journal was kept while lived at West Point and the remainder while she lived in New York City and Garrison, New York. It is a detailed daily journal recounting family events, business, visits, correspondence, achievements and relationships, as well as the social and cultural activities in which she and other family members were involved.
