Biographical History

Joseph Robert Meservy (1842-1924) was a pioneer for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from the British isle of Jersey who moved to the Salt Lake Valley. While in his service to the Church, he served as a missionary, built the "Spanish Wall" in Salt Lake City, and served in various Church callings for thirty-five years until his death in Fremont, Idaho.

Joseph Robert Meservy was born in the British isle of Jersey on April 30, 1842. After spending his childhood in French school, after his family joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints they emigrated to Utah in April 1853 via New Orleans. Once they arrived, he served in various positions in both Utah and Idaho for the Church. In addition to serving in various Church callings from being a missionary to serving as a clerk and MIA leader in his local ward, he also built the "Spanish Wall" in Salt Lake City to protect the city from Native American attacks, established various settlements in the "belt" from Santaquin, Utah to Franklin, Idaho, and aided other settlers to the region. After marrying Augusta P. Cook, Laura Stuttleworth, and Mary Kingsbury and having a total of fourteen children with the three wives, he died in Fremont County, Idaho on June 6, 1924.

Scope and Contents

The Joseph Robert Meservy and Phebe Meservy Higbee notebooks consist of colored photocopies of the original notebooks. Joseph Robert Meservy's notebook begins in 1864 and contains a number of autobiographical notes, diary notations and summaries of pioneer business transactions. Phebe Meservy Higbee's notebook contains news and magazine articles, poetry, recipes, and family records. Both notebooks contain multiple pages of Pitman shorthand.

Scope and Contents Collection includes two family record books related to the Meservy and Robert families coming out of the Isle of Jersey. The first record is a copy of a book titled "Genealogie de la Famille Messervy," and is a record of the Messervy family line on the Isle of Jersey extending into France and England as far back as 1400.
