Biographical History

Gordon Bitner Hinckley (1910-2008) was the fifteenth President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Utah.

Gordon Bitner Hinckley was born June 23, 1910, in Salt Lake City, to Ada Bitner Hinckley and Bryant S. Hinckley. Hinckley studied journalism and English at the University of Utah, graduating in 1932. In 1933, he served a mission to the British Isles for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and in 1937 was hired as the executive secretary of the Church's Radio, Publicity, and Mission Literature Committee. On April 29, 1937, Hinckley married Marjorie Pay in the Salt Lake City Temple. They were married for 67 years and had five children: Kathleen, Richard, Virginia, Clark, and Jane. After serving in various leadership positions in the Church, Hinckley was called as Assistant to the Twelve in 1958, and in 1961, as an apostle. He later became the fifteenth President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1995, serving until his death on January 27, 2008.
