Biographical History

Anthony W. Ivins (1852-1934) was an ecclesiastical leader and apostle for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Utah and Mexico.

Anthony W. Ivins was born on September 16, 1852 in Toms River, New Jersey to Israel Ivins and Anna Lowrie Ivins. Anthony and his family emigrated to Salt Lake City, Utah in 1853, but only stayed for a short time before his family was called to move to St. George to help establish the settlement of members of the church there.

In 1875, Anthony was called to serve his first LDS mission to explore Arizona and New Mexico. In 1877, he was appointed St. George Constable, but was soon called to leave on his second mission to New Mexico where he focused on Native American relationships with the members of the churhc. On November 9, 1878, Anthony married Elizabeth Ashby Snow, and together they had three children--Antoine Ridgeway Ivins (1881-1967), Florence Ivins Hyde (1885-1980), Stanley Snow Ivins (1891-1967). In St. George, Anthony began his political career when he was elected to the City Counsel. In 1882, Anthony was called to serve a third mission to Mexico City where he was appointed the Mexican Mission president. On October 6, 1907, Anthony was called and ordained an Apostle for the LDS Church.

Anthony W. Ivins passed away on September 23, 1934 in Salt Lake City, Utah and is buried in the Salt Lake City Cemetery.
