Biography

James Madison Barlow was born July 9, 1812 in Georgetown, Kentucky to Thomas Barlow II and Susan Childs Isbell. He was a silversmith, jeweler, and watchmaker in Kentucky from 1835-1849, after which he left to join the California Gold Rush. After stopping in Salt Lake City, he was convinced by Brigham Young to stay and practice his craft. There he married at least three wives and had at least sixteen children. Barlow made the first sacrament cups used in the Tabernacle in Salt Lake City out of silver and was also commissioned to mint coins for the territory. He was the first and only dentist in the Utah Territory for many years. He died February 8, 1893 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
