Once from 1929 to 1931 when he was on leave to work at the Bell Telephone Laboratories and a second time from 1937 to 1939 when he served as mission president of the New England mission. Eyring was largely responsible for the planning of the new science building that the university built in 1950. The building was renamed the Carl F. Eyring Science Center in 1954 in his honor.
