Biography

Captain Sir Richard Francis Burton, was a British geographer, explorer, translator, writer, soldier, orientalist, cartographer, ethnologist, spy, linguist, poet, fencer and diplomat; born on March 19, 1821 in Torquay, Devon, England; died on October 20, 1890 in Trieste, Austria-Hungary; a captain in the army of the East India Company; led an expedition to Lake Tanganyika for the Royal Geographical Society; attended Trinity College, Oxford, but did not graduate.

Correspondence, a portrait of Burton, and an autograph book. The items are both to and from Richard Burton and his wife, Isabel Arundel Burton. The materials deal largely with personal matters including Richard Burton's visit of the Mormons in Utah.
