Biographical History

Angus Munn Cannon (1834-1915) was a pioneer and early leader of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Utah.

Angus Munn Cannon was born on May 17, 1834, in Liverpool, Lancashire, England, to parents George Cannon and Ann Quayle. In 1840, the family was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by Cannon's uncle John Taylor. The family traveled to Nauvoo in September of 1842, but Cannon's mother died at sea. His father died in Nauvoo in 1844, so he lived with his sister and her husband. In 1849, he traveled to Salt Lake City, Utah, and in 1850 went with the George A. Smith company to settle in Southern Utah until 1851, when he returned to Salt Lake.

From 1854 to 1858, Cannon served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to the Eastern States Mission, preaching in Connecticut, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware; he was called back because of the Utah War. Cannon was head of one of the first families called to settle St. George. He was elected St. George's first mayor in 1861. In 1867, he and his family moved back to Salt Lake City, where he became the president of the Salt Lake Stake in 1876, serving in that capacity until 1904. After being released as stake president, he was called as stake patriarch.

Cannon was convicted of practicing polygamy, and served six months in the Utah State Penitentiary in 1885. He had six wives: Sarah Maria Mousley, married 1858; Ann Amanda Mousley, married 1858; Clarissa Cordelia Moses Mason, married 1875; Johanna Christina Danielson, married 1887; Maria Bennion, married 1886; and Martha Maria Hughes, married 1884. In 1896, he ran as the Republican candidate for the state senate seat, but was beaten by his wife Martha Hughes Cannon, who was the Democratic candidate.

Angus M. Cannon died on June 17, 1915, from apoplexy in Salt Lake City, Utah.
