Biographical History

Edwin Butterworth (1912-2010) was a journalist, author, teacher, and administrator in Utah.

Edwin J. Butterworth, Jr. was born on November 5, 1912 to Edwin Fielding Butterworth and Florence Boud Butterworth in Salt Lake City, Utah. He served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Switzerland, Germany, and France from 1933 to 1936 and in 1938 he married Dorthy Ann Leetham in the Salt Lake Temple. Following his mission, Butterworth returned to Salt Lake City where he joined the Salt Lake Tabernacle Choir and became a newspaper editor. He worked for the Salt Lake Telegram and the Salt Lake Tribune from 1936 to 1947. He then transferred to the Deseret News, where he worked until 1949. In the autumn of that year, Butterworth joined the Brigham Young University journalism faculty. At BYU he taught classes in journalism, editing, and public relations. He was likewise active in promoting the university, ultimately serving as chairman of the Public Communications Department and as the head of the BYU News Bureau. While at BYU, Butterworth edited a compilation of university president Ernest Wilkinson’s speeches titled, Ernestly Yours, as well as a series of vignettes, I Remember Ernest. Butterworth also authored an official historical volume for the university’s centennial celebrations in 1975, Brigham Young University: 1000 Views of 100 Years. Butterworth retired from the university at the close of 1977. He passed away on April 5, 2010.
