Biography

George Armstrong Custer; b. Dec. 5, 1839 in New Rumley, Ohio; d. June 25, 1876 at Little Bighorn River, Montana Territory; U.S. cavalry officer; graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., 1861; served in the Civil War, became brigadier general; killed at Battle of Little Bighorn.

Typewritten book drafts with handwritten corrections. The materials are early versions later published. "Curse not his Curls" is about George Armstrong Custer and the Battle of the Little Bighorn. "Strike Them Hard" is about a massacre of Piegan Indians on the Marias River on 23 Jan. 1870. These items were submitted to the Old Army Press for publication.

The original materials reside in the Ellison--Camp collection at the Denver Public Library. The items were initialy created and collected by Walter Mason Camp with some materials generated by Robert Ellison. Also included are typescripts of some of the items.

The collection contains letters written to and from Gould about personal and regimental matters during and immediately after the Civil War. Includes three quartermaster receipts, a claim of an enlisted man for back pay in which Gould acted as attorney, and responses to Gould's request for an honorable discharge.
