Biographical History

Jeffrey Roy Holland (1940-) served as President of Brigham Young University from 1980 to 1989.

Jeffrey R. Holland was born in St. George, Utah. He served a mission to England from 1960 to 1962 before returning to St. George where he married his wife, Patricia Terry, whom he had courted prior to his mission. The two attended Dixie College, and later Brigham Young University. Holland graduated in 1966 with a master's degree in religious instruction. They are the parents of three children.

Employed by the Church Education System, the Hollands moved across the United States where Jeffery worked as a teacher, and later director of institute at the University of Washington, Seattle. Jeffery chose to pursue a doctoral degree at Yale University, and upon graduation in 1972, he returned to Utah were he contined to work with the CES as a teacher at the Salt Lake Institue. This was short lived as months later, he was called as the director of the church's new Melchizedek Priesthood MIA. He held this position for two years before being appointed the Dean of Religious Education at BYU in 1974. In 1976, Jeffery was named the Commissioner of Education for the Church of Jesus Chirst of Latter-day Saints. He held this position until his appointment as president of Brigham Young University in 1980.

Jeffery was instrumental in the establishment of Jerusalem Center for Near Eastern Studies and the establishment of religious education at the heart of Brigham Young University.

Jeffery was released as President in 1989 after recieving a call to serve in the First Quorum of the Seventy. In 1994, he was called as a member of the Quoroum of the Twelve Apostles of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
