Biography

Don Lamore Young (1919-2017) was a Latter-day Saint steel worker and war veteran.

Don was born on September 11, 1919 in Payson, Utah to parents Don and Lula Whipple Young. He lived in Payson until he was 17, when he moved to Salt lake City. In 1941 he met and married Sarah Luella Snow, whom he would later divorce in 1953. Young elisted into the Army and was a sergeant in the 25th Infantry Division, stationed in the Philippine Islands. He recieved a Purple Heart in April 1945 after being wounded in battle. In January 1946 Young retired from the Army. After retirement from the Army, Young went on to work for Geneva Steel as a millwright. He became a member of the United Steelworkers of America, where he worked as a grievance officer. He was later elected as the Union President. In 1982 he retired from Geneva Steel and the Union and became president of the Retired Steelworkers. In 1956, Young met Clara Louise Kinsey and they married in July of 1956.
