Biography

John Hamilton Morgan (1842-1894) was a member of the Quorum of the Seventy in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

John Hamilton Morgan was born on August 8, 1842, in Greensburg, Indiana, to Garrard Morgan and Eliza Ann Hamilton. He served in the Union Army during the Civil War and afterward went to Eastman's Commercial College in New York. In 1867, he moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, and opened the Morgan Commercial College, later closing it in 1874. John was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on November 26, 1867, and married Helen Melvina Groesbeck almost a year later on October 24, 1868. He served as a missionary in the Church's Southern States Mission from 1875-1877, then was made president of that mission in 1878. John was a known practicing polygamist, and he married two other women, Annie Mildred Smith and Mary Ann Linton. In 1883, he became a Republican representative to the Utah Territorial Legislature, then in 1884, he became one of the seven presidents of the Quorum of the Twelve, which is a general authority in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in this capacity for ten years, until he died of typhoid and malaria on August 14, 1894, in Preston, Idaho.
