Biography
Charles W. Penrose (1832-1925) was an author, poet, lyricist, newspaper editor, and professor in Utah.
Charles W. Penrose was born February 4, 1832, in London England. In 1861, he emigrated to Utah and settled in Ogden, Utah. He later became an editor of the Deseret News in Salt Lake City and professor of theology at Brigham Young Academy. Penrose became an Apostle in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1904, serving as second counselor to President Joseph F. Smith in 1911, and second counselor to President Heber J. Grant in 1921. Penrose died May 19, 1925.

Contains 40 letters to Samuel Russell [Jr.] from various people. Includes letters from N.V. Jones about Samuel Russell's [Sr.] estate, as well as from George N. Dewey, Cousin John M. Contains mission correspondence of Samuel Russell [Jr.] with Charles W. Penrose, the First Presidency of the LDS Church, Ben E. Rich, Joseph F. Smith, and B.H. Roberts, as well as a letter from Marie and Mary Walser of Zurich, Switzerland, which included two pictures of them (transferred to Photo Archives). 9 items, dated April 21, 1902 to October 15, 1903 (two letters undated).

Typewritten and signed letter dated 18 Nov. 1950 and addressed to Ruth M. Penrose. Smith thanks Penrose for sending him a book of poems by the Mormon Apostle, Charles W. Penrose. Smith praises Charles W. Penrose's poetry and his service to the Mormon Church.

Edwin Stratford reminiscence and diary
Photocopy of a 270-page volume. Author briefly recounts his ancestry, early life, and conversion to Mormonism. Diary reflects his missionary activities in the counties of Essex, Suffolk, Middlesex, and Herefordshire. Includes occasional references to Charles W. Penrose, Martin Slack, and others. A typed transcript of the document, prepared in 2000 by Special Collections at Brigham Young University, is also included.
