Biography

Stephen Markham (1800-1878) was an early member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and a close friend of Joseph Smith.

Stephen Markham (1800-1878) was an early member of the LDS Church, a friend of Joseph Smith, and a pioneer. He was also a Colonel in the Nauvoo Legion. He was with Joseph Smith in Carthage until he was driven out of the city at bayonet point by an angry mob until blood filled his boots. Joseph was martyred later that night. He was later appointed by Brigham Young to be captain over several pioneer companies to Utah.

February 9, 1800, in Ontario, New York to Dinah Merry and David Markham; m. 1822, Hannah Hogaboom in Rush, New York; four children; joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Kirtland, Ohio; helped move the Smith family from Missouri to Nauvoo, Illinois; leader in the Nauvoo Legion attaining rank of Brevet Colonel; body guard to Joseph Smith; 1844 fended off mobs with a large cane he termed Rascal Beater; left to get medicine for Willard Richards when he was surrounded by a mob who forced him on his horse by driving bayonets into his legs until his shoes filled with blood; returned to Nauvoo too late; after arrival in Utah, Hannah took her three sons to California during gold rush and died there; m. Prudence Fenner on January 30, 1846, in Nauvoo, Illinois; captain in the first pioneer company to enter the Salt Lake Valley; returned across the plains many times to lead companies; m. widow Mary Curtis on October 5, 1850, in Salt Lake City, Utah; had fourteen children; m. Lydia Maria Macomber on April 12, 1852, in Salt Lake City, Utah; m. Anna Mathews, on July 21, 1852; m. widow Martha Jane Boice on October 11, 1852, in Salt Lake City, Utah; one child; Settled on land near the Spanish Fork River; George A. Smith named the location Palmyra; fought in the Walker War in Springville, Utah; a Colonel in the Militia; took part in the wars near Goshen; instrumental in peace talks with Ute indians; m. Lucy Ann Bellows on April 22, 1856, in Salt Lake City, Utah; m. Eliza Jane Adamson on November 30, 1867, in Salt Lake City, Utah; d. March 10, 1878, in Spanish Fork, Utah)
