Biographical History

Richard E. Hissrich (1914-2011) was an American soldier from Pennsylvania.

Richard Edgar Hissrich was born August 19, 1914 to Richard John Hissrich and Mary Garvey in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He grew up in Pittsburgh with his family. He attended St. Vincent Prep school to become a priest in the Catholic Church until 1936 when he dropped out to help his family. His mother passed away in 1935. In 1937 he got a job working for Westinghouse, where he worked until 1938. In the spring of 1941 Richard was drafted into the United States Army of which he was an active member until 1945 when the war ended. In August of 1942 he began receiving letters from Mary Agnes Gall. These letters soon turned into love letters and they were married on April 12, 1943 in Los Angeles, California. They had one child during the war, Mary Louise Hissrich, who was born August 20, 1944. Soon after the war they had two more children, Barbara Ellen on August 16, 1946 and Richard Albert on February 28, 1948. These children were followed later by John Edward on February 21, 1960. After the war Richard was able to work for Westinghouse once again. Hissrich passed away in Pittsburgh on March 13, 2011.

Scope and Contents Includes correspondence between Richard E. Hissrich and Mary Agnes (Gall) Hissrich, from August 16, 1942 to July 7, 1945, while he is serving in the military during World War II. The letters are written almost daily about life and how they feel for each other. There are also several letters written between Mary Agnes and Richard and their parents during a time after they were married and Mary Agnes was living near where her husband was stationed. The later letters tell of their first child...
