Biographical History

Joseph Brigham Keeler (1855-1935) was one of the first students enrolled in Brigham Young Academy who eventually served as 1st Counselor to Karl G. Maeser and an educator of Brigham Young University.

Joseph B. Keeler was born to Daniel Hutchinson Keeler and Ann Brown in Salt Lake City, UT on September 8, 1855. After his family fled to Provo in 1858, he eventually married Martha Fairbanks in 1860 and later enrolled in Brigham Young Academy as one of the original 29 students on January 3, 1876. While attending, he also served as an assistant editor of the Provo Enquirer in 1880, served as a missionary to the Southern States in 1882, and even served in various government positions such as City Assessor and County Recorder.

In 1884 he was beginning to teach at the academy, but after the Lewis Building burned to the groud, he taught at a temporary building while also helping in gathering funds to keep the school open. He continued to serve BYU until 1921, when he decided to retire after 37 years of service to the University. On December 21. 1935, he passed away at the age of 80 in Provo.
