Biographical History

Zina Diantha Huntington Jacobs Smith Young (1821-1901) was the third president of the Relief Society of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, a sericulturist, and the wife of Ladder-day Saint prophets Joseph Smith and Brigham Young.

Zina Diantha Huntington was born January 31, 1821 in Watertown, New York, to William Huntington and Zina Baker Huntington. Zina was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by Hyrum Smith on August 1, 1835. On March 7, 1841 Zina married Henry Bailey Jacobs, with whom she had two sons: Zebulon Williams Jacobs and Henry Chariton Jacobs. Later that year, she married to Joseph Smith, Jr. on October 27, 1841. On February 2, 1846 she married Brigham Young, with whom she had a daughter, Zina Presendia Young. In addition to her three biological children, she raised four stepchildren (Mary, Clarissa Maria, Willard, and Phoebe) after their mother Clarissa Ross Chase Young died. In her later years, Zina served as Relief Society General President beginning in 1888 until her death on August 27, 1901 in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Handwritten poems, minutes of a meeting of the Relief Society of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and a biography of Zina D. H. Young, a wife of the second president of the Church, Brigham Young. The poems were written at the death of Brigham Young in 1877. The Relief Society minutes relate to a meeting held in the 64th District school house on 7 Nov. 1893 in an unknown location.
