Biographical History

Harrison R. Merrill (1884-1938) was a professor and academic administrator in Utah.

Harrison Reuben Merrill was born on November 13, 1884 in Smithfield, Utah to Orrin Jackson Merrill and Elizabeth White. He was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1893, and later served as a missionary in Ireland. In 1909 he married Edna Johnson, and they had four children.

Merrill taught school at the Oneida Stake Academy in Preston, Idaho, before joining the faculty at Brigham Young University in 1923. He remained a professor of journalism and English at the university until his death in 1938. He also served as director of the Extension Division from 1936 to 1938. During his career he also wrote poetry and fiction.

Merrill died on August 20, 1938 in Provo, Utah.
