Biography

Fred W. Carlyon (1865-1956) was a hobby photographer in Alaska and a property developer in Washington.

Fred W. Carylon was born Fred William on June 19, 1865, in Union Grove, Wisconsin to William Ralph Carlyon and Elizabeth Backhus. His family relocated to Washington in 1883 with the Gold Rush. Fred married Coralie H. Chambers on October 15, 1891, in Olympia, Washington. After their marriage, Fred and Coralie moved to Wrangell, Alaska where Fred operated a jewelry and watchmaking shop. The shop was open from 1898 to 1906. While in Alaska, Fred practiced photography around Wrangell and the Stikine River District, B.C. Carylon relocated permanently to Olympia, Washington in 1923 where he developed several properties including a racetrack and the Carlyon Beach Resort. Fred died on March 7, 1956, in Olympia, Washington.
