Biography

Siegfried Carl Schwatlo (1899-1988) was a German bank director and auditor, and veteran of the German Army during World War II.

Siegfried Carl Schwatlo was born on November 17, 1899, in Frankfurt an der Oder, Germany, to Carl Otto Schwatlo and Gertrude Friederike Auguste Retter. He attended the Königliches Friedrichs-Gymnasium (Royal Friedrichs high school) in Frankfurt, but left with permission in December 1917 to become an officer and took the second savings bank exam. He married Marie Herta Johanna Raetsch on July 9, 1928, in Germany. (Marie was born on August 23, 1896, in Muskau, Germany.) They divorced in January 1950 and had no children. Siegfried served as the director of the State Savings Bank in Grünberg, Silesia (Poland) from August 1934 to February 1938; he was then transferred to the State Savings Bank in Eisenach, Thuringia, serving as manager and then director from February 1938 to May 1945. He was dismissed from that office as a civil servant in October 1945 as part of the post-war government cleanup (removal of Nazi officers from all administrative offices). During this time, he also served in the military (August 1939 to May 1945), after which he was taken prisoner and held in Cheshire, England, and Abergavenny, Wales, from May 1945 to January 1949; he stayed in England after being released. While there, Siegfried met Pearl Joyce Vardon; they were married on April 29, 1950, in Abergavenny, Wales (Pearl was born on April 5, 1915, in Jersey, England). In April 1952, in order to become a civil servant again, he was investigated and found not guilty of committing or participating in any war crimes as a military officer and member of the Nazi party. In June 1953, he became the association auditor at the Hanseatic Savings Banks and Giro Association in Hamburg, Germany. After a year of training in the examination service, he was given a permanent position as an association auditor, carrying out all the audits of the association's 4 branches until his early retirement in March 1963 due to poor health. He was particularly noted for his high levels of knowledge and skill in performance, as well as his professional enthusiasm. He died in 1988 in Pappenheim, Germany, at the age of 89.
