Biography

Riley Moore Moffat (1947-) was the head of reference at the Brigham Young University-Hawaii library.

Riley Moore Moffat was born March 22, 1947, in Ogden, Utah to Lloyd Brown and Helen Moore Moffat. He married Connie Reinwand on August 1970 and they had four children. In 1972, he received his B.S. from the Church College of Hawaii (now BYU-Hawaii), his M.L.S. from the University of Hawaii-Manoa in 1973, and an M.S. in 1980 from BYU. Riley served as the library director for LDS church schools in Tonga in the mid-1980s before becoming geography and map librarian at the Harold B. Lee Library of Brigham Young University. In 1987, he became the head of reference at the Joseph F. Smith Library of BYU-Hawaii. Riley has published on the history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Hawaii, on the history of mapping in Hawaii, and on population histories of various countries. Riley retired from BYU-Hawaii in 2014.

Scope and Contents

Unpublished typed edition of the mission journal for Henry P. Richards' second mission to Hawaii from 1877 to 1879. Titled "The Extraordinary Life of a Traveling Elder" and compiled by Riley Moore Moffat in 2019. Includes an introduction and preface providing historical details about Richards, his journals, and his first mission to Hawaii from 1854 to 1857. Also includes some images, maps, and glossary of Hawaiian terms used in the journal.
