Biography
James L. Purdy (1793-1886) was a lawyer and businessman in Ohio.
James L. Purdy was born in July 1793 in Hopewell, York County, Pennsylvania, to Patrick Brady Purdy and Jennett Jane Wallace. He studied law and was admitted to the Bar in New York State in 1882. Eventually, James settled in Mansfield, Ohio in 1823, where he lived for the rest of his life. His career involved many business ventures, including in canals, railroads, and banking, as well as real estate. James was actively involved in civic affairs throughout his lifetime. He married Mary Beaufort Hodge in 1839 and they had seven children. He died at home in Mansfield, Ohio, on July 11, 1886.

Color copy of a handwritten letter from John H. Purdy, living in San Francisco, to his brother James L. in Mansfield, Ohio. Purdy mentions his role in surveying a city, which became Humboldt City, located on Humboldt Bay, California, as well as his mining ventures in the region. Dated April 30, 1850.
