Smith, Lorenzo Wickliffe, 1897-1970
Biographical History
Lorenzo Wickliffe Smith (1897-1970) was an Arizonian businessman and faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Lorenzo Wickliffe Smith, known as Wick throughout his life, was born on February 19, 1897 in Snowflake, Navajo County, Arizona to John Walter Smith and Lois Evelyn Bushman Smith. In his childhood, Wick survived being run over in what his family considered a miracle. He attended and graduated from Snowflake Stake Academy, while working as a freight car driver for his father’s mail route. On June 5, 1918 Wick married Blanche Rogers in the Salt Lake City Temple and a year later moved to Gila Valley to farm with his father. In 1824 Wick moved his family to Tucson so he could attend the University of Arizona. A year later Wick changed from education to a Sunset Dairy route and quickly began their top salesman. Wick eventually bought Modern Dairy and involved his whole family in the production and delivery of their milk products. After their youngest child left home, Wick and his wife served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Great Lakes while their sons ran the business. When Wick sold the diary in 1862, the couple moved to Mesa and served in the LDS Mesa Temple.
Lorenzo Wickliffe Smith died on October 21, 1970 in Mesa, Maricopa County, Arizona.
