Biography

Catherine Steele (1816-1891) was a Latter-day Saint woman in southern Utah.

Catherine Campbell Steele was born to Mary Knox and Michael Campbell on November 16, 1816 in Strabane Tyrone, Ireland. She married John Steele on January 1, 1840. After the birth of their first child, Mary, they moved to Scotland, where Catherine gave birth to two more children, John and Margaret. After joining the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, John and Catherine travelled to Nauvoo, Illinois, in 1845, where their two youngest children, John and Margaret, died within two weeks of each other. In 1846, John joined the Mormon Battallion and travelled with his wife and daughter to New Mexico and Colorado before finally returning to Salt Lake City. While in Utah, John and Catherine had five more children: Young Elizabeth, Mahonri Moriancumr, Susan Adams, Jane Catherine and Robert Henry. They later moved to Parowan, Panguitch, and Toquerville, Utah. Catherine died in Toquerville on June 15, 1891.

Handwritten, two-page letter dated July 11, 1886 and signed with "Josie." The item was addressed to Mrs. C. Steele of Toquerville, Utah. The salutation of the letter states, "My Dear Grandma." Josie states she will not be able to come "to the Temple to be adopted" this year. She and her husband are headed "to the City, for it will not be long until it comes Court time again." She also mentions oppressive weather, participating in mountain outings, and domestic activities.
