Biographical History

Charles V. Hugo (1944- ) is a Brigham Young University alumnus and the Chief Building Inspector for the City of Provo.

Charles (or Chuck) V. Hugo was born on February 22, 1944. After returning home from a two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he moved to Provo, Utah, to attend Brigham Young University, where he temporarily worked as a carpenter. After receiving his degree in Sociology, he worked for Colorado Outward Bound, an outdoor program designed to help juvenile delinquents and other potentially trouble children develop good life skills. While in Colorado, he also met his wife Nancy, whom he married on July 10, 1967.

Hugo continued working as a counselor in Southern Utah, but after discovering that the distance between his wife in Provo was causing a rift in their marriage, he opted to leave the profession altogether. He returned to his initial career as a carpenter--a career which helped him pay for his education prior to graduating from BYU.

As a carpenter, he received an opportunity from the City of Provo to work as a building inspector for the Department of Community Development's Building Inspection Division. After 11-years of working in this career, he was promoted to the position of Chief Building Inspector in 1981 and remained in this position until retiring 25 years later in 2006. After retiring, he continued to help in the community any way he could. Recently, he has participated with the Charles Redd Center in two oral history projects they conducted: the Provo South Stake Oral History Project in 2008 and the "Historic Downtown Provo Oral History Project" in 2012.
