Biographical History

Charlotte H. England (approximately 1934- ) is the wife of George Eugene England, Jr., founder of "Dialogue: A Journal of Mormon Thought."

Charlotte Ann Hawkins England was born to Karl John Hawkins and Josephine Hawkins in approximately 1934. She married George Eugene England, Jr. in Salt Lake City, Utah on December 22, 1953. In 1969-1974, the couple moved from Utah to teach at St. Olaf's Lutheran College in Northfield, Minnesota. The couple then moved to Provo, Utah so George could teach Mormon Literature at Brigham Young University, under the request of then-Brigham Young University professor Jeffrey R. Holland. During his time at the university, George established the Mormon Studies journal "Dialogue: A Journal of Mormon Thought" and published various books based in Mormon scholarship. However, from 1981 to 1998, George faced opposition in university politics. Maintaining unorthodox opinions concerning his view of God's capacity to learn and the university's treatment of controversial topics, George eventually left BYU to teach at Utah Valley State College as a resident writer. He started work in 1998 and continued until his death in 2001.

After George's passing, Charlotte remained in the Provo area, sharing her memories of life in Provo and her husband’s work to the Charles Redd Center's "Historic Downtown Provo Oral History Project."
